Mass conversions from Hinduism to Buddhism on the rise due to an escalation of atrocities on the historically oppressed communities

Around 236 Hindu sanitary workers from Karhera village of Ghaziabad Uttar Pradesh converted to Buddhism on 14th October 2020 on the anniversary of the greatest mass conversion in history from Hinduism to Buddhism in 1956, led by Dr B.R. Ambedkar.
The UP event was organized in the Balmiki Mohalla of Karhera with the approval of District magistrate Dr Ajay Shankar Pandey. One member each from 236 families participated in the conversion.

BACKGROUND:

In Hathras district, on 29th September, a 19 year old girl from the Scheduled Caste Valmiki community was raped and brutally beaten breaking her spine and neck. Four men from the dominating Thakur community were named as the perpetrators of this horrific crime by the dieing victim in hospital. She later succumbed to her injuries and died a painful death. Her body was burnt before daybreak by the UP police despite pleas by family members to let them perform the last rites. The aftermath of this incident started an international outrage demanding justice for the victim. letters were written to UN for intervention, demanding CM Yogi's dismissal. Despite Nationwide protests no action by PM Modi nor the President, who himself is from the scheduled castes community, was taken

Many Balmikis of Uttar Pradesh took it upon themselves to take action. They decided enough is enough and opted to abandon Hinduism in favour of a more compassionate religion,  Buddhism. Mr Rajratna Ambedkar, the President of The Buddhist Society of India, who was already helping the victim's family to gain justice, arranged a conversion ceremony for those interested.

The rape victim's family could not be a part of this conversion program, as they were under high police surveillance and mostly house bound.

Ven. Bhante Nibbano of Delhi gave Dhamma Diksha (ordination). Mr Rajratna Ambedkar explained the need to leave Hinduism and administered 22 vows of Dr Ambedkar. Certificates of religious conversion were provided. As per sources, around 2 lakh Valmikis from Uttar Pradesh are planning to embrace Buddhism in favour of Hinduism on 14th April 2021.
