A talk by Satpal Muman, a leading advocate working on the anti-caste movement in the UK; organised by the Decolonising LSE collective
About this Event:
Caste-based oppression is not limited to South Asia, but is replicated in migrant communities across the globe. In the UK, the ‘Caste discrimination and harassment in Great Britain’ report commissioned by the government in 2010 confirmed the existence of caste oppression in education, employment, health care, religious institutions as well as public spaces. Organisations campaigning for legislation outlawing caste discrimination have faced varied challenges, revealing the nexus and widespread coordination between right-wing groups in the UK and India. In this talk, Satpal Muman focuses on the history of anti-caste mobilisation in the UK; the implications this has for politics in the UK and globally, and chart the possible next steps in this fight for justice.
About the Speaker:
Satpal Muman is Secretary of Ambedkar International Mission in London and the co-founder and Chairman of Caste Watch UK, a leading charity fighting caste discrimination in the UK. He has been at the forefront of the campaign to bring anti-caste legislation in the UK.
